Description
Although much ambiguity remains with the piece, Wieniawski’sFantaisie orientale, Op. 24, is a delightful showpiece, receiving less attention than deserved! Achievable for advanced and even developed intermediate players, thiswork concentrates a variety of colors and sonorities, extended techniques and unique harmonies, into, according to the editor, Tyrone Grieve, a “highly stimulating setting.” Wieniawski’sminiature rhapsody is bursting with character and virtuosity without sacrificing “technical approachability” and “poetic enchantment.”
Composed sometime in the 1860s or 1870s,Fantaisie orientale wasdedicated torenowned violinist, Jeno Hubay, but notpublished until 1885, 5 years after the composer’s death. In this edition, editor Grieve reconciles inconsistencies between earlier editions and, on top of multiple fingerings and bowings, provides a generous wealth of history and commentary in the preface. “In short, this miniature is fun to play, regardless of its performers’ playing level.”
