Eugne Ysae was a legendary violinist who left a great legacy to modern players, especially in his Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27. These sonatas are virtuosic works, each dedicated to other great violinists of Ysae’s day, including Enesco, Kreisler, and Szigeti. Like Paganini’s 24 Caprices, they stretch players to the outer limits of their physical capabilities; like Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas, they are deep and rich in character.
